Circular Economy
Leclanché concept

6R concept for circular economy and compliance with the future EU battery directive

FIND OUT ABOUT THE 6R CONCEPT
THE CONTEXT

What is a circular economy ?

A circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible.

Our impact on the environment has always been a key concern at Leclanché

  • Currently, we are one of the few companies to use water-based cell coating to reduce our ecological footprint
  • The integration of a circular economy will help optimise our product life cycle and also reduce its environmental impact
  • This is completely in line with the new EU battery directive
NEW EUROPEAN BATTERY DIRECTIVE

The new directive is set to replace the 2006 EU directive in June 2023

  • Expected in June 2023 to replace the 2006 EU directive
  • The new EU battery regulation introduces ground-breaking requirements to implement a circular economy for batteries in Europe
  • The directive aims :
    • To minimise environmental footprint
    • To keep key raw materials in Europe
    • To optimise utilisation
LECLANCHÉ INVOLVEMENT IN THE EU REGULATION
  • Leclanché is a member of the RECHARGE association, Europe’s industry association for advanced rechargeable and lithium-ion batteries
  • In collaboration with RECHARGE, Leclanché follows the latest evolution of the EU Battery directive
  • Leclanché is a member of the committee for creating the European Standard for the Product Environmental Footprint

Reliability

Maximise lifespan, performance and value of the batteries

  • Dedicated team for after-sales services & life cycle management
  • IoT solutions for remote data analysis, logging and messaging

Repowering

For improved performance or at the end of life, Leclanché batteries can be replaced with updated versions within the same pack dimensions

  • Leclanché maximises the number of components that can be reused

Reuse and Recycle

  • At the end of life of the battery system, the customer contacts Leclanché after-sales services & Life Cycle management
  • Leclanché evaluates the remaining capacity of the modules
  • Leclanché works with partners that manage recycling or reuse of modules for 2nd life application
  • Leclanché invoices/credits the customer for recycling/reuse of the batteries
MODULE RECYCLING IN DETAIL

Recycled content

  • Leclanché is already using recycled material to minimise environmental footprint
  • Leclanché continues to increase the recycled material used for the production of batteries in compliance with future European directives :

Record

As required by the European Battery Directive, Leclanché will create a Battery Pass for each battery for full traceability from 2026:

  • Origin of raw materials including recycled content ratio
  • Battery Carbon Footprint Labelling
  • Battery performance
